Mission & Values

A shared calling to worship, welcome and serve across our four village churches.

Our shared mission
The Benefice of Hampsthwaite with Felliscliffe, Killinghall and Birstwith is called to be a visible sign of God’s love in our villages. We seek to worship faithfully, welcome generously, and serve our communities with compassion and hope. Our mission is shaped by the rhythm of rural life, the gifts of our congregations, and the needs of those around us.

What shapes our life together
These values guide our worship, our relationships, and our service across the benefice:

  • Worship at the heart — We gather in different buildings and styles, but we share one rhythm of prayer, praise and Holy Communion.
  • Welcome for all — We want every person who steps into our churches to feel seen, valued and at home.
  • Rooted in community — Our life is woven into the life of our villages: schools, groups, events, and the quiet everyday moments that build connection.
  • Growing in faith — We encourage one another to explore faith, ask questions, and deepen our relationship with God.
  • Caring for one another — Pastoral care is a shared responsibility, offered with gentleness, confidentiality and compassion.
  • Serving with hope — We seek to respond to need, support the vulnerable, and work for the flourishing of our communities.
  • Stewards of creation — Our rural setting reminds us of our responsibility to care for God’s world with gratitude and respect.

How we live this out
Across the benefice, these values take shape in many ways:

  • regular worship in each of our four churches
  • All Age services that welcome families and children
  • pastoral visits and support for those in need
  • involvement with local schools and community groups
  • seasonal events, concerts and gatherings
  • open churches for quiet prayer and reflection
  • care for our church buildings and churchyards
  • collaboration between PCCs and congregations

These shared practices help us grow together as one benefice while honouring the character of each village church.

A rural benefice with a shared calling
Our mission is not something we hold alone. We are part of the Diocese of Leeds and the Ripon Episcopal Area, working alongside neighbouring parishes to support ministry, training and community life across our region. Together, we seek to be a people of faith, hope and love in the places we are called to serve.
